Sitting | Max | A* | A | B | C | D | E |
A-Level Maths Jun 2018 9MA0 | 300 | 229 | 184 | 155 | 126 | 98 | 70 |
A-Level Maths Jun 2019 9MA0 | 300 | 217 | 165 | 134 | 103 | 73 | 43 |
A-Level Maths Oct 2020 9MA0 | 300 | 214 | 162 | 130 | 99 | 68 | 37 |
Average % for 2018 & 2019 | 100% | 74% | 58% | 48% | 38% | 29% | 19% |
I am sure June 2023 still seems a long way off but here are the grade boundaries for the first three sittings of the new A-level Maths. Again it is probably wise to ignore the results of the few students who sat the exam in October 2020 and look at the averages for the for the two pre-pandemic sittings.
You may be surprised to see top end grades have been awarded for rather modest percentage scores. That is because the exams are difficult but the proportion of students gaining each grade is not allowed to vary by much. Essentially, you are in a competition with your peers up and down the country.
Cumulative Pass Rates | A* | A*-A | A*-B | A*-C | A*-D | A*-E |
A-Level Maths Jun 2018 9MA0 | 31% | 61% | 76% | 85% | 91% | 95% |
A-Level Maths Jun 2019 9MA0 | 17% | 41% | 57% | 74% | 88% | 97% |
A-Level Maths Oct 2020 9MA0 | 29% | 55% | 73% | 86% | 91% | 95% |
Here are the cumulative pass rates for A-level Maths from 2018 to 2020. The reason the results were so high in 2018 is because the vast majority of candidates were the last sitting of the old syllabus where there were 6 modules and resits of modules were allowed throughout the course. The 2019 results probably give the most reliable prediction of future outcomes.
Here are a pair of specimen papers for AS Maths. You will find question papers, mark schemes, staff solutions and video solutions to every individual question on the Pure paper. Use them well throughout your Lower Sixth year to get a feel for the standard of question you are expected to deal with at this stage of your A-level course.
Sitting | Max | A | B | C | D | E |
AS Maths Jun 2018 8MA0 | 160 | 105 | 90 | 75 | 61 | 47 |
AS Maths Jun 2019 8MA0 | 160 | 101 | 87 | 74 | 61 | 48 |
AS Maths Oct 2020 8MA0 | 160 | 93 | 76 | 59 | 43 | 27 |
Average % for 2018 & 2019 | 100% | 64% | 55% | 47% | 38% | 30% |
Up to 2017 students were automatically entered for AS-level Maths in their Lower Sixth Year, as it was a compulsory part of the old A-level course. Once AS became stand alone and optional, Chosen Hill, like many other schools opted out to avoid increased costs. Exam fees vary from subject to subject but for Maths they are currently £59.70 for AS-Level and £124.10 for A-level. Under the old system AS exams were part of the full A-level and there was no separate charge. We did enter students for AS Maths in 2018 but were the only subject to do so. Nationally the Edexcel entries for AS Maths dropped from 12,657 in June 2018 to 4,446 in June 2021.
Though you will not be entered for AS-levels this year, past AS papers provide a very good measure of your progress half way through your A-level course. You will have access to several sets of AS papers and the table above shows grade boundaries for exams actually taken. Because the October 2020 sitting was basically for students unhappy with the grade awarded by their school, there would have been very few candidates sat the exams. The red line in the above table shows you the percentage of marks required for each pass grade averaged over the pre-pandemic sittings of 2018 and 2019.
The AS consists of two exams: a 2 hour Pure paper worth 100 marks and a 1 hr 15 min Mechanics & Statistics paper worth 60 marks (30 Mechanics & 30 Statistics). Note that in all sittings to date a Grade A has been awarded for less than 2/3 of the possible marks.
