Friday Lesson:
Completing The Square Revisited
We studied Completing the Square last week and I included a video lesson with lesson notes, exercise and solutions as an optional extra. Since few of you did well on the homework on this topic we will use today's lesson to consolidate and learn to solve equations with this method. Please watch the video, print the lesson notes and complete the two associated exercises. Each time you complete a question mark it straight away from the solutions provided. Look to learn from your mistakes.

These are the higher tier grade boundaries for all past sittings of the new Edexcel GCSE Maths. The first two sets of exams were not at all popular with students but the June 2018 exams were viewed as more reasonable. The grade boundaries were higher but students felt they had more opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. Grade boundaries for November exams are not as reliable as boundaries for June exams because there are far fewer students taking what essentially are re-sit exams.
All except the November 2020 exams were taken before the pandemic but give an indication of what you can expect both when completing past papers and when sitting your actual GCSE exams in May/June 2023.

A-Level students have to be able to prove that the square root of 2 is an irrational number. However, the proof is also accessible to GCSE students. The only idea with which you may not be familiar is that fractions with coprime integers have been cancelled down as far as possible.
The Square Root of 2 is Irrational (6 Min):
